Earthing materials: specification and supply

What to specify, and what to hold a supplier to, when buying earthing materials.

What to specify

Target earth resistance and the soil resistivity it is based on

Electrode type, material, diameter and length

Backfill compound type and volume where used

Conductor size and material for the earthing and bonding network

Jointing method and its suitability for burial

Test points and inspection pits for future measurement

What to check on delivery

That the electrode material and copper thickness match the specification — thin copper bonding is a common shortcut

That conductors are the specified cross-section

That backfill compound is the specified product and quantity

That joints and clamps are rated for the fault current

Why this is worth checking

Earthing is buried and invisible. A shortfall in copper thickness or conductor size cannot be seen after installation and will not be discovered until the system is tested — or until it is needed.
