ABB magnetic contactors

How contactors are selected for motor and lighting switching duty.

This page was a price list

The legacy version of this page published a price list. Prices are not reproduced here: brief §30 requires commercial data to come from supplied current sources, and the legacy figures carried no validity date. Send us your requirement for a current quotation.

What a contactor does

A contactor switches a load repeatedly under the command of a control circuit. It is not a protective device: protection is provided by the breaker or fuses upstream and by the overload relay in the starter.

What determines the selection

The utilisation category — AC-1 for resistive loads, AC-3 for squirrel-cage motors, and others for specific duties. A contactor rated by current alone will be undersized for motor duty.

The motor rating in kW at the site voltage

The operating frequency, since frequent switching shortens contact life

Coil voltage, which must match the control circuit

The number and type of auxiliary contacts needed

Common mistakes

Selecting on current rating without checking the utilisation category is the most frequent error, and it shows up as welded contacts after a few months of motor duty.
